Calamorro Sky race
A Unique Intersection of Earth and Sky
Each year, athletes from across Europe converge in Benalmádena for an extraordinary event that promises to challenge their endurance and invigorate their spirits: the Calamorro Sky Race. This goes beyond mere competition. This journey traverses a landscape that requires admiration, honor, and unwavering strength.
The Mountain: Calamorro
The race derives its name from Mount Calamorro, the striking peak that stands 771 meters above sea level, overseeing the beautiful Costa del Sol. The name “Calamorro” carries an air of mystery regarding its origins. It is commonly thought to derive from ancient Andalusian dialects or Arabic influences, potentially translating to “rounded summit” or “place of lookout.” Historically, this location functioned as a crucial vantage point for monitoring coastal activities. Even in contemporary times, visitors can enjoy views of Gibraltar and the African coastline from its summit on a clear day.
Mount Calamorro features the Benalmádena cable car, providing breathtaking panoramic views that extend from the Sierra Nevada mountains to the Mediterranean Sea. However, on race weekend, it evolves into a vibrant arena for the daring and the distinguished.
An Unparalleled Race
The Calamorro Sky Race forms an integral part of the esteemed Spain Sky Running Series, a national circuit that draws elite athletes and international adventurers from around the globe. The route ascends through jagged ridgelines, winding forest trails, rugged scrambles, and open summits.
What sets this race apart from others? This experience strikes an ideal harmony between the demands of technical skill and the allure of the natural landscape. This course strikes a perfect balance, welcoming amateur runners while presenting a challenge that requires complete concentration and significant elevation gain. Featuring routes that span approximately 27 kilometers and exceed 2,000 meters of vertical gain, this location presents one of the most challenging uphill experiences in Southern Europe.
Established in 2011, the event has evolved into a significant destination on the skyrunning circuit. The unique blend of rugged terrain, coastal climate, and lively village atmosphere sets it apart as an exceptional destination.
Benalmádena: A Destination with Heart
The Calamorro Sky Race stands out from other alpine races that take place in remote mountain areas, as it is intricately connected to the vibrant community of Benalmádena Pueblo. Runners embark and conclude their journey in the vibrant center of our picturesque village, supported by enthusiastic locals, friends, and fellow competitors. This event unites culture, community, and competition in a manner that is rarely achieved by others.
At I AM Benalmádena, we take pride in welcoming 40 runners this year, continuing our tradition from the past three years. Our venue provides a space to rest, recharge, eat, and immerse oneself in the vibrant spirit of the village. While our mountain may challenge them, our pueblo welcomes them with open arms.
Calamorro is a destination that resonates deeply, whether you are a runner, a supporter, or an admirer of untamed beauty. Its essence lingers long after you cross the finish line.
